The barrier

The lower esophageal sphincter, or LES, works with the surrounding diaphragm to form an important barrier between the stomach and esophagus.

Gastric movement

The stomach needs to receive, mix and move a meal onward efficiently. When stomach contents remain longer or the stomach becomes more distended, reflux can become more likely in some people.

Coordination and pressure

Pressure between the abdomen, stomach and esophagus, together with coordinated digestive movement, influences whether stomach contents move upward.

Tissue defense
