Before you talk about our products, I want you to understand how I think. This module is my story, the question I keep asking, and why I care so much about matching the right ingredient to the right mechanism.
I'm a board-certified gastroenterologist and I've been in practice for more than 20 years.
In all that time, the thing that bothered me most wasn't the hard cases. It was the patients who left with a diagnosis and still had no idea why they felt the way they did. So instead of asking what I could give someone for bloating, I started asking why the bloating was happening in the first place.
That question pulled me deep into digestive physiology: fermentation, microbial balance, motility and reflux mechanics. Eventually, it led to Atrantil and Re:flux.
A symptom goes in, a product comes out. But nobody has stopped to ask why the symptom is happening.
I want to understand the physiology first. Then I can look for ingredients that support the mechanism involved.
Bloating is my favorite example because two people can describe the same symptom and have very different things happening underneath it. That's why “What do I take for bloating?” isn't the first question I want to answer. Here are four mechanisms I think about:
Gut microbes ferment carbohydrates and other substrates, producing gases including hydrogen and, through other microbes, methane. Where and how much fermentation occurs can affect symptoms.
When movement through the digestive tract slows or becomes uncoordinated, food, fluid and gas can be handled differently, contributing to bloating and distension.
Changes in which organisms are present, what they're doing and where they're located can influence fermentation and digestive symptoms.
Sometimes the amount of gas isn't the whole story. Changes in gut-brain signaling and visceral sensitivity can make normal digestive activity feel much more uncomfortable.
Polyphenols are a huge family of naturally occurring plant compounds found in foods like berries, olives, tea and cocoa, as well as many of the plants we study. But “polyphenol” doesn't describe one molecule or one function.
There are thousands of different polyphenols, with different chemical structures and different biological properties. When someone tells me “polyphenols are good for you,” I hear something like, “medications are good for you.”
My next question is: Which one? In what form? And for what purpose? Because when we're developing a formula, the category isn't enough. The specific compound matters.
I'm never trying to win on ingredient count. Each ingredient is there because we identified a physiological function we wanted to support and looked for compounds that made sense for that job. Three ingredients in Atrantil. Four in Re:flux. If I can't explain why an ingredient is there, it doesn't belong in the bottle. I'll walk you through every one in Module 2.
We developed these formulas around specific digestive mechanisms, and we continue to study how they perform in people. Atrantil has been evaluated in published clinical research, including randomized controlled research. Re:flux has also undergone clinical evaluation, and I'll walk you through the data for each product in Module 2.
I'm proud of those results. But I'm equally careful about what those results allow us to say.
I'd rather you undersell the evidence than overstate it. Accuracy is part of the brand.
